What happens on the hallways stays on the hallways.

Bizarre things I have recently seen in or around one UNC dorm or another:

  • A girl struggling to break open an oddly-sturdy piñata in the form of a monkey, right outside my hall door. When repeatedly hitting it failed, she tried tearing off a string that was supposed to burst it open. The poor party favor instead came apart at the neck. Candy was yielded, eventually… but at what cost?

  • Two stray black shoes, one about ten feet from the other, in an apartment complex lobby, with no other people in sight.

  • A mixed jumble of two discarded newspapers — one Herald-Sun, one News & Observer — strewn lengthwise across a bathroom doorway. The mess remained for about sixteen hours with no comment.

  • A mysterious black cat wandering about the buildings of my neighborhood, which invariably runs away the moment I make eye contact. (I met a different, much more cuddly-friendly one today on a different part of campus, wandering around in the rain. He didn’t seem to mind the weather.)
